ONE OF MY FAVORITE POEMS
High Flight (Poem)
The poem High Flight was written by a young fighter pilot during World War II. Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee Jr., was an American citizen who was born of missionary parents in Shanghai and educated in Britain's famed Rugby School. He went to the United Stated in 1939, and at the age of 18, won a scholarship to Yale. Like other Americans of the time who wished to aid in the cause of freedom, he decided to enlist in the services of a nation actively engaged in war. Magee enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in September 1940. He served overseas with an RCAF Spitfire Squadron until his death on active service in December, 1941.
His poem, composed in September 1941, was scribbled on the back of a letter which he mailed to his mother in Washington. Pilot Officer Magee was killed a few months later when his Spitfire plane collided with a bomber-pilot trainer on approach to the airport over Lincolnshire, England. He was 19 years old.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

Words: Henry J. van Dyke, 1907. Van Dyke wrote this hymn while staying at the home of Harry A. Garfield at Williams College, Massachusetts. It was first published in the Presbyterian Hymnal in 1911. It also appeared in the Poems of Henry van Dyke, 1911. Van Dyke wrote:

Pray for the Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers, Ministers of Music, Sunday School Teachers and ALL those who are making an effort to serve the Lord. Pray the Lord to provide help with workers & finances to accomplish HIS goals.
There is power in the name of Jesus! Demand satan to "loose" in the name of Jesus! Command body to respond to the Power of God! The body is subject to the Spirit & Power of God! Execute judgment of God against the crisis. The Truth outweighs the facts!

From 1558 until 1820, the Roman Catholics in England were not allowed to practice their faith openly. During that era someone wrote "The 12 Days of Christmas" as a kind of secret catechism that could be sung in public without the risk of persecution. The song has two levels of interpretation: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the church. Each element in the carol is a code word for a religious reality.
